1. You use relaxation and self-hypnosis to help
people with problems. What is hypnosis?

2. What is self-hypnosis?

3. Is this a “trance?”

4. I have seen strange things done with hypnosis on TV
or on stage. Can I be made to do things against my will?

5. Will I completely get over my problem with this program?

6. If I have questions about my problem that are not
addressed by your program, what should I do?

1. Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation that you go through each time you fall asleep. You may experience some drowsiness, but you are alert and in control at all times. You have experienced it spontaneously while attempting to listen to a boring lecture, and you may “space out” in such a way that you are very relaxed. That is a form of hypnosis. In children we call it “daydreaming.”

2. I will give you some instructions. When you learn them and give them to yourself, you can put yourself in a very relaxed state that we call self-hypnosis. Research has demonstrated that when you are able to relax yourself effectively, you will experience much less difficulty overcoming problems. You may have more confidence and motivation and will power than you have ever had before.

3. In some ways it is a trance. It is a deep state of relaxation which you have experienced many times. I just don’t like to use the word “trance” because it has the popular connotation of being “under” someone else’s influence and not being in control. That is why I use the term “deeply relaxed state” rather than trance. But it is still the same thing that you experience every night just before you fall asleep.

4. Absolutely not. Remember, self-hypnosis is very different from what you see on stage or in movies or TV. You are simply in charge of relaxing yourself so that you are drowsy, almost asleep. It is similar to the Lamaze method in childbirth or various techniques of meditation. When you are in control and able to relax your mind and body, you will begin to have control over the inner power that you have in order to overcome your problems.

5. Most people completely overcome their problem, whether it be fear or smoking or difficulty getting to sleep. Some find that they are left with a sense of “awareness” of the problem which they can live with comfortably.
